La Grande Arche is a 2025 French biographical drama directed by Stéphane Demoustier, based on Laurence Cossé's 2016 novel La Grande Arche. It chronicles the true story of Danish architect Johan Otto von Spreckelsen, a 53-year-old professor unknown in France, who unexpectedly wins President François Mitterrand's 1983 international competition to design the Grande Arche de la Défense. This massive structure was meant to align with the Louvre and Arc de Triomphe as a flagship of Mitterrand's Grands Travaux.Thrust into the spotlight, von Spreckelsen battles bureaucracy, budget constraints, and political pressures while striving to realize his visionary design, from elephant-foot foundations to Carrara marble walls and a towering footbridge.
